Creating shape

This bland space was dominated by a huge conifer and the harsh boundaries, and the recently created pond was slightly lost in the far corner. So I designed new shapely borders to break up the squareness of the garden, and by removing the conifer created more open planting space.
The original garden (click to enlarge) Borders were undefined (click to enlarge) Now there are clearly defined, deeper borders (click to enlarge) Planting was very limited (click to enlarge) A mixture of shrubs and perennials now fill the borders (click to enlarge) The expanse of grass and fence (click to enlarge) These plants will mature to obscure the fencing (click to enlarge) The conifer dominates (click to enlarge) Colour and texture are immediately introduced to the new border (click to enlarge) The corner of the garden needed a focal point (click to enlarge) The bench now draws your eye through the planting (click to enlarge) The pond seemed detached from the rest of the garden (click to enlarge) The new borders incorporate the line of the pond, bringing it back into the garden (click to enlarge) The newly placed bench makes a great spot to enjoy the sun surrounded by plants (click to enlarge)
The overall result is a vibrant and inviting garden with movement and texture. Over time, the boundaries will be softened with climbers and shrubs, and the borders will fill out creating drifts of colour for year round interest.
